Chapter IV
Research Methodology
Research Design
The researchers used the descriptive method of research in the current study using survey research to determine the actual interactive skill of active social network users of UP Cebu students.
The survey method through questionnaires will be given to UP Cebu students that are active social network users. The questionnaire would tell and examine the interactive skill of these students through their answer of the various questions.
Sampling Procedure
The researchers used the non-probability sampling specifically the purposive sampling. The questionnaire will be given to UP students who use and checks their social network accounts daily. Thus, these students can be called as active social network users. Both genders were considered but then the ratio is not equal.
Research Environment
The research is conducted in the University of the Philippines – Cebu , Lahug, Cebu City, Cebu during the second semester of school year of 2010-2011.
Research Respondents
The respondents and participants of this study are the students who are officially enrolled in the University of the Philippines- Cebu on its second semester for school year 2010-2011. There are 10 students, 3 are males while 7 are females.
Research Instrument
The researchers used a developed questionnaire which was checked and authenticated by their adviser who is their Communications 2 professor. The questionnaire composed the profile of the respondents and the proper test itself. The proper test was divided into three parts. The first part shows the social network usage of the respondents. The frequency of usage was included in this part. The second part determines the respondents’ views on social networking. The last part examines the interactive skill of the respondents. The questionnaire contained open-ended structured questions. The second and the last part have rating-formatted items. With the rating-formatted items, this aided the researchers to determine the respondents’ degree with regards to the question given.
Data Collection
After the approval of the questionnaire by the researchers’ Communication 2 professor, the researchers asked permission to their professor to start employing questionnaire to the respondents. Being permitted by the professor, the researchers handed out the questionnaires to ten (10) active social network users of UP Cebu. The questionnaire was retrieved after giving the respondent five minutes to answer the tool. The data collected were tabulated.
Data Analysis
Quantitative approach was used in the analyzing the data of this research study. The researchers made use of percentages to show the information being gathered. The survey questions provided information about the social network usage, view on social networking and interactive skill of the respondents.
