Chapter 4
Methodology
This chapter presents the research design, sampling procedure, research environment, research respondents, research instruments, data collection and data analysis.
Research Design
The research method was descriptive as it involves collections of data in order to determine the impacts of Internet usage on Time Control among the 3rd year U.P. Cebu Management students in A.Y. 2010-2011. Specifically, it was planned to answer the following sub-problems; How many hours do the students spend in using the Internet in a day, in weekdays and weekends. Does the usage of the Internet affect the respondents Study Time, Socialization, Daily Routine as in Grooming and Eating and does the Internet usage of students affected their control on time for other tasks.
Sampling Procedure
The respondents of the study were the 3rd year UP- Cebu Management students both from block a and b for the second semester of AY 2010-2011.There were projected 40 students in 3rd year UP- Cebu Management and the researcher get 20 samples out of them. Thus, the respondent in the study was 50% of the total population of the 3rd Year UP Cebu Management students. Ten (10) students respondents both from block a and b were taken randomly.
Research Environment
The research was conducted in University of the Philippines- Cebu College, Lahug, Cebu City during the second semester of the academic year 2010 -2011.
Research Respondents
The respondents of the study were the 3rd Year UP- Cebu management students, particularly twenty (20) student’s respondents in all. Ten (10) student’s respondents were taken from block A and ten (10) student’s respondents were taken also from block B Management Students.
Research Instrument
Using a researcher’s made questionnaire it was checked and validated by the researchers’ Communication 2 professor at the same time their adviser, the questionnaire was made primarily for the conduct of this study. The questionnaire was divided into three parts. The first part was the basic information of the respondents. Their age and sex were included in this part. The next part was the internet usage patterns of the respondents. Hours in using the internet, purpose of using the internet were included in this part. And last part was the impacts of using the internet. This aided the researchers to determine whether there were impacts with the exposure of the internet.
Data Collection
In gathering pertinent data, the following steps were made. First, the researchers make a questionnaire and it was validated and checked by the researchers’ Communication 2 Professor and at the same time their adviser. Second, the researchers asked permission from the our Communication 2 Professor if they can distribute the questionnaire in order for them to be entertained by their student’s respondents, the 3rd Year UP- Cebu management students, particularly twenty (20) student’s respondents in all. Ten (10) student’s respondents were taken from block A and ten (10) student’s respondents were taken also from block B Management Students. The questionnaire was retrieve immediately by the researchers. After all the data are gathered, they are tabulated in a Microsoft Excel with the help of statistics and SPSS.
Data Analysis
Descriptive statistical tool, particularly frequency, weighted mean, and percentages were adopted to determine the impacts of Internet usage on Time Control for the respondents other task such as their study time, socialization and their daily routine such as grooming and eating. This is limited only among twenty (20) student’s respondents of 3rd year U.P. Cebu Management students in A.Y. 2010-2011. In finding the mean, the formula µ=∑x/N where N= number of respondents and ∑x= sum of all data values that was collected. In finding the percentage (%), the formula %= (∑x/N)(100) was used. Other data analysis were done using Microsoft excel and SPSS.
Ho1 There is no significant difference between the time used in the internet to their time used in studying, socialization, daily routine as in grooming and eating
