Introduction

Rationale of the Study
In a world full of countless deadlines and hefty price tags, one must strive to survive and accomplish every challenge. This involves being able to manage one’s time well and juggle a number of activities at the same time just to earn money in order to support and satisfy his or her needs. A perfect example of these people are working students.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, “half of all full time undergraduates and 81% of part time undergraduates are employed while enrolled in college” (Knudsvig, 2011). This implies that many of the students nowadays are thinking of working in order to pay for his or her school fees, support one’s family or satisfy his or her own needs. Just like a regular employee who tries to balance his or her time for work and for family, working students are also expected to be able to manage one’s time in order to do well in work as well as in school. An ordinary student has loads of free time for school works and leisure but despite this, many non-working students still fail to excel in school. This suggests that working students are required to exert more effort so that one’s participation in the business will not affect his or her studies.
In an actual situation at present, a student of a prestigious university in Cebu who at the same is one of the forerunners of a popular network marketing company is a constant dean’s lister despite his participation in the networking business. This is the positive effect of the business. On the other hand, a student from another university in Cebu who is also in the networking business dropped out of school because according to him, “Nang-eskwela ta para makakwarta para sa future, unsa may pulos sa pag-eskwela kung nag-earn na man ka karong panahona?” (We study in order to earn money for the future, what’s the use of studying if we are already earning today?). This shows the negative effect of networking business on students. This clearly shows that when one works while studying, his or her time management, study habits, grades, and attendance in class may or may not be affected. Thus leading one to excel in school and become a dean’s lister or fail in school and become a drop out.
The researchers chose this study because it is very helpful especially to undergraduates who are planning to venture into employment while studying. Since there are numerous working students, the researchers focused on a flourishing business at present, Network Marketing. Network Marketing, otherwise known as networking, is a method of marketing that utilizes independent representatives to reach potential customers that a company otherwise would not reach with traditional methods (Burks, 2010). In other words, it works by selling products as well as recruiting other people to join the business. This kind of business is fit for college students’ hectic schedule because it does not require one to stay in an office in order to earn. Students also prefer joining networking business to earn income because unlike other jobs, network marketing is an informal way of working. It only requires one to have commitment and the desire to earn in order to be able to communicate well and recruit other people. It does not even require one to reach a particular educational attainment, a certain age, or status in the society. These are the reasons why people, especially students, are drawn to the networking business.
This study aims to determine the effects of networking business on the studies of students in Metro Cebu. Young people are given the chance to go to school in order to learn and prepare for the future but due to difficult times, students are also required to work in order to pay for school fees, support one’s family, or satisfy his or her own needs. Therefore, this study is very relevant to the society today because if the youth take for granted education, then the future will be at stake.



Statement of the Problem
Objectives of the Study:
The objectives of this study entitled “Effects of networking business on the studies of students in Metro Cebu” are the following:
· To determine how the students manage their time for studies
· To find out if the business affected the study habits of the students
· To identify the reasons why the students joined the business
· To recognize how the grades of the students can be described when they joined the business
· To learn if the students are still able to comply the school requirements on time
· To discover how the business affected the attendance of students in school

Significance of the Study
The study regarding the effects of networking business on the studies of college students in Metro Cebu could benefit several people; namely: College students in networking business, college students who are not into networking business, parents, networking business companies, college professors or teachers and the future researchers.
This study could benefit college students in networking business through letting them evaluate themselves on how much their studies in general is affected by the business. The main target of this study is to help college students since they are the ones in the community who would be more interested in this type of business. College is the transition stage towards maturity. This means it is the phase of preparing for work. This type of business serves as a training for the students. In addition, networking business is mainly comprised of college students. College students have numerous demands compared to other people in the community. They need money for tuition, projects, interests and many more thus they joined in this business. The outcome of this study could aid the students in developing their habits such as their time management.
Another people who would also benefit from this research are college students who are not into networking business.This research could serve as a source of information about the networking business. Through the data of this research paper, the students who have little knowledge on this business could assess its positive and negative traits. This would serve as a reliable basis of facts on this type of business.
This study will also help the parents. This will allow the parents to know on the advantages and disadvantages of networking business towards the studies of their children. This could help them monitor their children concerning their studies and the business the children entered. Therefore, parents would be more aware on the state of their children’s studies.
One of the variables is networking business thus, networking business companies can obviously benefit from this. This study will let the networking business companies know their effects on the students specifically those who are in college. This study could be a medium to help networking business companies aid the students in their studies since these companies are a contributing factor to the results of the student’s academic performance. Through this study, they would know what to improve in their business.
The teachers or college professors can also benefit from this study because they will be able to know possible factors that could affect the student’s academic performance. The teachers will be able to understand the burdens of a working student particularly those who joined in the networking business.
Lastly,this study will serve as an avenue for future researches. This has been the first ever case study vis-à-vis networking business. The future researchers could expand this study more and could help address the flaws of this research. This could give ideas to future researchers who would conduct the same study.
