CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Food, shelter, and clothing are three of the necessities in an individual’s life. Necessities are things that individuals, especially men, cannot live without to survive the daily tasks required of them. Things that men may be able to live without are known as wants.

Usually, wants are the things that men aim to have for the sake of quenching the thirst to acquire them. These wants have the ability to distract a man in a way that it increases the attention towards these than towards the necessities of man. Through these methods, these wants becomes temptations. They tempt and they usually succeed in doing so. An example of a temptation is indulging oneself in chocolate. Entenmann (2006) stated that not all types of chocolate is beneficial to the body and overall health of humans.

Chocolate may be one of the basic known necessities of life, food. When one engrosses himself/ herself to eating more than he/she should be eating, chocolate ends up destroying the body and deteriorating the health of an individual. Men and women have long known the taste of chocolate. Aztecs were one of the first civilizations to create chocolate from cacao beans according to Compton’s Encyclopedia (1996). In his article, De Jesus (2006) wrote that the people who are given credit for bringing chocolate to the world are the Spaniards. From the age of the Aztecs and the Spaniards to the recent Hershey’s chocolate bar, it will always be recorded that a lot of people that eat chocolate stop from doing so because either it has damaged their bodies or distracted them from eating what they were supposed to eat, a proper meal.

An individual’s health must be well kept and maintained to prolong the span of life that he or she may be able to have. Not only is there a need for physical wellness but also mental fitness. The ability of men to think and make use of the brain is what kept them from being able to live more than what most creatures are unable to do. They have used strategic methods to keep on hunting like a predator to a prey. Through the years, there have been people that considered some chosen men of the world to be the most brilliant of men. These brilliant men brought thinking, especially logical thinking, to a level wherein the brain can assess the situation and respond well to any stimuli that needed it.

Gazzaniga (1992) presented that not all brains are similar and even twins do not have exactly the same brain. Knowing this, every person has a unique brain and mental capacity. Martinez (2010) stated that the the cortex, functions for reasoning, intelligence, creativity, and problem solving. Martinez said that specifically in the cerebral cortex, the pre-frontal cortex or most forward section is where the complex cognitive functions like attention control, planning, decision-making, goal-setting, strategic reasoning and self-monitoring can be located. The qualities of human intelligence may be described through the activity present here in the pre-frontal cortex. Through these details, there is evidence to prove that logical thinking is one of the function that is performed by the brain. Other functions of the brain may also affect the performance of a person.

In the Philippines, local chocolates are sold in supermarkets and stores nationwide. These are manufactured and distributed to small-scale retail stores like sari-sari stores. Chocolates reached these local markets and sold to men and women and usually students. Students require thinking logically most of their student life. They also need to eat and keep their mind and bodies healthy.

The proponents of this study investigated whether chocolate, if taken in, would affect an individual’s mental health specifically the logical thinking of an individual. The proponents asked freshmen students of UP Cebu College to answer two tests, the pre-test and the post test. Ten out of 20 respondents were grouped and administered with a bar of dark chocolate while the other 10 were not given any chocolate. The two variables, chocolate and logical thinking was correlated by using the t-test to measure any significant difference between the two. Students were chosen because they are usually the target market of chocolate producers and suppliers.

Statement of the Problem

The study’s main objective is to determine the effects of dark chocolate on the logical thinking skills of the college freshmen students of the University of the Philippines Cebu. It specifically aims:

1. To find out the chemical composition of dark chocolate that makes it a potential thinking skills enhancer.

2. To know the health benefits of dark chocolate.

3. To determine if there is a significant difference between the results of the test administered to those that did not eat dark chocolate and to those who did.

Significance of the Study

The researchers had been curious on some sayings that chocolates and other foods which contain high amounts of sugar could stimulate brain. This is the primary reason that had led them to the making of the study. Nevertheless, the results of the study may not only be for the advantage of the grades on the research subject of the researchers, but may also be beneficial to the following people:

Students

This may drive them to include dark chocolate as one of their logical thinking skill enhancer which is very important particularly in taking entrance and aptitude examinations.

Parents

Parents who are directly concerned with school performance may not have to worry so much on the weaknesses of their children when it comes to logical thinking. They may buy the cheaper and more appetizing dark chocolates as brain stimulators for their children rather than the ones more expensive, such as brain stimulating tablets and others.

Dark Chocolate Sellers and Manufacturers

This may contribute to more productive sales of dark chocolate sellers and manufacturers for more people, principally those who are going to take logical examinations, may have to buy dark chocolates to be able to consume something that will stimulate their brain.

Future researchers

This research may lead and guide the future researchers, especially students who are required to do thesis or research papers, towards further studies on other foods and factors that stimulate brain, and the other health benefits of dark chocolate. They may use this research as a basic reference for their studies.
