CHAPTER IV
Research Methodology
Research Participants
The respondents were selected freshmen college students of the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus. The selection was made according to the results of the online IQ test that was administered using the free Internet access provided by the school. The 20 selected participants that partook in the test were those that acquired the result ‘average’ in the IQ test.
Research Instrument:
A pre-test and post-test was used in the conduct of the study. The participants were asked to answer the series of questions written on each questionnaire which was composed of a set of verbal logic, letter sequences, nonverbal or spatial and numeracy or math tests. The data collected from sample respondents were analyzed using simple mathematical and statistical tools.
Sampling Procedures:
Convenience sampling and quota sampling techniques were used in selecting the respondents of the study. Convenience sampling was made in collecting the UP Cebu freshmen college students who would take the IQ test. The researchers chose the more convenient or the “easier to find” students who were foreseen to be their friends, classmates, and the UP Cebu dormers. After getting the results of the IQ test, quota sampling was then made to determine what the population of the selected IQ test takers looked like in terms of their IQ levels. At least twenty of them must have an intelligence quotient ranging 85 to 114 which would include them to the average level. The ages of the respondents range from 16-18 years.
Data Collection
The researchers collected 35 UP Cebu freshmen college students and let them take the IQ test. Their IQ levels were the bases in determining if they were qualified to become the respondents of the study. The ones chosen were those with average IQ levels. The selection of respondents began in March and lasted for 5 days. Overall, it took a week for the researchers to collect the needed data in their experiment.
Pre-test and Posttest Administration
The conduction of the study happened in the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus and the time of the day was afternoon.
The selected 20 freshmen college students with average IQ level were divided into two groups. Both groups took the pre-test and posttest simultaneously and at the same place with environmental conditions that was conducive. Ten of these 20 respondents were administered with dark chocolate after the pre- test and 15 minutes before the posttest. The other 10 participants, which was the control group, were not administered with dark chocolate.
Questionnaires were distributed to the respondents fifteen minutes after the administration of dark chocolate, and they were asked to answer the questions written on the questionnaire for 10 minutes. The answered questionnaires were then collected by the researchers for data analysis.
The scores between the pre-test and the post-test of the respondents would show the effects on the consumption of dark chocolate on their logical skills. The average scores from the posttest that would be administered to the experimental group would be compared to that of the control group to determine whether there was a significant difference between the pre-test and posttest results.
Research Design
The main research method used in the study was experimental. The population sample, which is 20, was divided equally into two groups: the first group administered with dark chocolate and the other group without. The effects of the dark chocolate on the logical skills of the respondents were measured by the significant difference between the pre-test and posttest scores of the control and the experimental group.
To study the effects of dark chocolate in the logical skills of UP Cebu freshmen college students, the researchers used a univariate analysis involving one- way ANOVA to investigate the effect of dark chocolate on the experimental group. To test whether there was any difference in averages of the scores of the pre-tests and post-tests between the experimental group and the control group, two-way ANOVA was used.
Data Analysis
The researchers used the qualitative approach of the study. The scores of the pre-test and posttest set as the qualitative data in the experiment. Through it, the researchers were able to know if there would be a significant difference between the effects of dark chocolate on the logical skills between the control group and the experimental group. The application of theories in the study provides a better explanation on the results that were got in the study.
