Chapter III

STUDY FRAMEWORK

This chapter discusses the theory that can be applied to our study, the Theory of Planned Behavior. This theory proposed by Icek Ajzen in 1985, is an extension to the Theory of Reasoned Action, which is also proposed by Ajzen together with Martin Fishbein in 1975. The Theory of Planned Behavior seeks to explain how a person’s behavior may be deliberate or planned.

The Theory of Planned Behavior suggests that a person’s behavior is driven by an intention to carry out a certain action. The person’s intention can most likely predict his/her behavior. This intention can be determined by the following: the attitude toward the behavior, the subjective norms and the perceived behavioral control. The difference between the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Theory of Planned Behavior is that the latter has the third determinant of behavioral intention which is the perceived behavioral control. The model on the Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior shows how these three factors influence the person’s intention to perform the given behavior.

The attitude toward the behavior is the individual’s personal views and feelings regarding a certain behavior. It is determined by an evaluation of one’s beliefs on the consequences or outcomes in performing a behavior. If the person views the outcome of performing a behavior positive, then he/she will have a positive attitude towards the behavior. But if the person perceives a negative outcome in performing a behavior, then he/she will also have negative feelings toward the behavior (Mackenzie and Jurs, 1993).

Subjective norm is the individual’s perception on the normative expectation of others. The views of the people surrounding the individual influence his/her behavioral intention. It is determined by social pressure or the people’s beliefs whether to engage or not to engage in a behavior. If the individual’s significant others see the behavior as positive, then the individual is likely to meet their expectations in performing the behavior. (Ajzen and Fishbein, 1980)

And lastly, the perceived behavioral control refers to the person’s perceived ability to perform a behavior. This indicates how the person’s motivation is influenced by his/her perception of ease or difficulty in performing a given behavior. The greater the person’s perceived behavioral control, the stronger should be the intention which makes the person most likely to carry out the behavior.

Hence, Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior enables us to predict and understand a person’s behavior through his/her intention which is a combination of the attitude toward the outcome of a behavior, the subjective norm that influences the behavior and the perceived behavioral control which facilitates or inhibits the behavior.

Figure 1 in the next page shows the theoretical framework wherein the following factors: the attitude toward the behavior, the subjective norm and the perceived behavioral control affects the behavioral intention of the person and this intention results in the performance of a behavior. The perceived behavioral control refers to the person’s control over his/her actions and thus aiding the performance of the behavior.
Theoretical Framework (Figure 1)

Figure 2 in the next page illustrates the conceptual framework explaining how the Theory of Planned Behavior can be applied in the frequent use of Facebook. The conceptual framework shows that the intention of using Facebook is influenced by three factors. First, the attitude toward the behavior is the inclination of the person towards Facebook. Second, the subjective norm is social networking and since Facebook is a widely used social networking site, most peers would encourage the use of Facebook. And third, the perceived behavioral control is the individual’s sense of responsibility. When the individual has a sense of responsibility, he/she has the perceived behavioral control which enables him to use Facebook if he/she wishes to. When these three factors are combined, they form a behavioral intention which is now the intention of using Facebook. If there is an intention, then the individual would most likely carry out the behavior. A strong intention of using Facebook would lead the individual to the frequent use of Facebook. Since the subject of our study are the students, then the frequent use of Facebook would consequently occupy most of the student’s time, and this may result to poor study habits.
Conceptual Framework (Figure 2)

In the operational framework, addiction, online interaction and time management are the three factors which determine the student’s intention of using Facebook. Addiction is the inclination of the student towards the use of Facebook. Online interaction is the primary goal of social networking which is influenced by social pressure to engage in the use of Facebook. Time management refers to the sense of responsibility when the student balances his/her time in using Facebook. When these three factors are combined, they form an intention of using Facebook and this intention may lead the student to actually use Facebook. The frequent use of Facebook may result to poor study habits, thus their academic performance may be affected.

Figure 3 in the next page illustrates the operational framework wherein addiction, online interaction and time management affects the student’s intention of using Facebook and how this intention is carried out through the use of Facebook. Hence, the frequent use of Facebook implies that the greater the use of Facebook, the greater the effect on the academic performance.
