CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter describes the research design, the research sampling procedure, the research subjects, the research instrument used, the process of the data collection and data analysis.
Research Design:
The researchers will use the descriptive method as the type of research design. The purpose of this design is to describe events, the subjects as they are and as well as to compare and contrast relationships. There are two general categories of descriptive designs which are surveys and observational studies. The researches will use the category of survey. This will help the readers in knowing the effects of cellular phone on teenagers. This will also help compare the effects of early and late cellular phone acquisition on teenager's lifestyle.
Sampling Procedure:
The researchers will use a type of purposive sampling method as the research sampling procedure. This type is specifically called criterion sampling wherein the researchers will create a criteria and the respondents of the survey must qualify in the criteria. There are only three criteria. The first one is a Cebu City resident, the second one is from the age bracket of fifteen to eighteen and the third one is the respondent must have a cellular phone.
Research Subjects:
The researchers will choose Cebu City teenagers ages 15-18 as the respondents for the research. The researchers choose this age bracket since this is the age wherein teenagers have already undergone puberty and is already explorative towards the world. The respondents also have to be in school and should have their own cellular phones.
Research Instruments:
As the research instrument, the researchers will give out questionnaires to the respondents. These questionnaires will help in answering the problem of the researchers. The first part of the questionnaire is about the respondents' general information which only includes their age and gender. The second part consist of a checklist on what the respondents usually do with their cellular phone. The third part consists of situations wherein cellular phone is involve with school works or during classes. The fourth part involves situations given wherein cellular phones involvement during the sleeping hours of the respondents and how it affected their daily activities. The fifth part gives positive and negative situations between the respondents' usage of cellular phone and their relationship to their family and friends. The last part consists of situations wherein there are possible usage of cellular phone during household chores and how it affected the respondents' performance to their household tasks.
The respondents answers to these situations will vary accordingly to who will choose strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree.
Data Collection:
Data will be gathered through a survey. During the survey, questionnaires will be given personally while some will be posted in the internet where far away or busy respondents can also answer. Data gathering will begin on March 4, 2011 and will end on March 11, 2011. Only one week will be given for the surveying. After the survey, answers will be separated by their part in the questionnaire and the age bracket of when the respondents receive their first cellular phone.
Data Analysis:
The collected data will be separated first by the age when the respondents received their first cellular phone. After separating, answers will also be separated by their part in the questionnaires. The researchers will tally the number of respondents who answered the same answer. After tallying, the percentage will be calculated wherein P is equal to the number of respondents over the total number of respondents.
The percentage will determine which situations are common among teenagers and if these situations are of positive or negative effect toward that aspect of their life.
