CHAPTER 4
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Overview
This study is entitled " Underemployment and Job Course Match: First Year Employment Status of Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Graduates of the University of the Philippines Cebu College AY 2009-2010". This study will focus on the graduates employment status in their first year of employment. Furthermore, the researchers would like to find out whether the graduates are properly employed or has landed a job-course match or underemployed in their first years of employment.
This study is a descriptive type of research. A descriptive type of research is used because the researchers would like to obtain information concerning the current status of a phenomena, in this case, the employment status of the respondents, to describe what exists with respect to variables or relationship between variables. More specifically, the researchers would like to obtain information on whether the respondents are 'properly employed' or underemployed.
Sampling Procedure
The sampling method that the researchers will adopt the Convenience Sampling method. This method is a non probability sampling technique where subjects are selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researchers. In the same sense, since the subjects of this study have graduated already from the university, the researchers will only include the graduates that they will be able to trace using the internet and social networking sites and contact information retreived from the college secretary's office.
Respondents
The respondents of this study are the graduates of BA in Psychology of AY 2009-2010 in the University of the Philippines. F rom the information we got from the college secretary's office, there were a total of twenty nine (29) graduates. The researchers were only able to trace twenty one (21) graduates. This number of graduates will most probably not reach a one hundred percent response because the researchers are using Convenience Sampling Method where only those who are available and accessible to respond will be included.
Research Instruments
To efficiently gather the needed information, the researchers will use a survey questionnaire for data collection. The questionnaire will consist of four parts with sub questions under each parts. The first part is on the subjects profile. Here, the respondent's name, address, age, sex and civil status will be asked. These questions are mostly open-ended. The second part is about the educational background of the subjects. They will be asked what awards they received upon graduation and if they were recipients of Latin honors. The third part of the questionnaire are questions about the employment profiles of the respondents. This part is divided into five subproblems. The first and second sub problem is about the nature of current employment company and their position and job description. These the items are close-ended as the researchers provided choices for them. The third sub problem is their job location. The choices are limited to within the Phiippines, Cebu Province, Cebu City and Abroad. The fourth sub problem are the reasons why they chose the job. The researchers also provided possible reasons for choosing their job. The fifth sub problem are situational questions which are very important as it is here that the researchers may be able to answer if the respondents are properly employed or underemployed. A four point scale rating of Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, and Strongly Agree will be the choices for the respondents to answer the situational questions. Another part of the questionnaire would be for the unemployed respondents to answer. The researchers will ask the reasons for their unemployment. Possible reasons are also given as choices for this part. The last part is where the respondents will be ask if they are planning, currently, or will not take up further studies and why. Generally, the survey questionnaire is close ended in nature.
Data Collection
Since the respondents of this study are mostly busy because of their jobs and other undertakings, the researchers will conduct data collection through phone calls, through e-mail (electronic mail) or whatever method is suitable for the schedules of the respondents that the researcher are able to track down. Since mostly all people nowadays have Facebook accounts, the researchers will also use this networking site to interact with the respondents.
Data Analysis
After the data collection, all the information collected within a period of two weeks will be collated, organized, and interpreted. The answers for every part of the questionnaire will be organized through frequency tables for easier interpreting. Of course, the employed and unemployed respondents will be tabled separately. Once all items in the survey questionnaire are summarized and interpreted, the researchers will now try to answer the sub problems in the statement of the problem based on the interpreted data. The researchers will also try to correlate the results with the related literature that they were able to gather for support. Then by the light of the findings, the researchers can now identify which respondent is 'properly employed' or underemployed. Conclusions will be formulated that would lead to the end of the study.
