CHAPTER IV
METHODOLOGY

Research Design
The researchers use the descriptive method of research in which people, event and phenomena are explained and described. This method also is used to have a compare and contrast analysis on cause-and-effect relationships of the things around us. Since the study is all about the cause-effect relationship between students and their going out during nighttime, the descriptive method is best suited to be used. With this method, we could obtain the factors that influenced students to have nightly activities as well as determine whether these activities have brought positive or negative effects to their academic performance.

Sampling Procedure
In selecting the samples to be used in conducting the study, we choose the non-probability sampling, particularly the purposive sampling. With this type of sampling procedure, we select those who meet the requirements of our study. There is no limitation established on the gender specifications of the sampling units because allowing both sexes to be our samples would enable us to also determine who goes out at night more often, the male or the female.

Respondents and Participants
The respondents of this study are college students ranging from first year to fourth year of the University of the Philippines Cebu and University of San Carlos Main Campus for the Academic Year 2010-2011. There are 50 respondents from UPCC and another 50 from USC Main. Their ages range from 17 – 25 years. These respondents take a big part in the accomplishment of the study.

Research Instrument
To conduct the survey, a three-page questionnaire is formulated and is distributed to the respondents. This questionnaire has four parts each containing 5, 10 and 15 questions that are to be answered by the respondents. It begins with a letter addressed to the respondents informing them of the researchers’ purpose in conducting the survey. Before the respondents start to answer the questions in the four parts of the questionnaire, they are to fill up first the blanks where in their basic personal information is asked. The first part of the questionnaire asks whether or not the respondent has nightlife and how often does he go out at night. In this part, the researchers would determine who are those that have nightlife, those that do not, and the frequency of their going out at night. The second part is all about college life, its difficulties and the ways students do to cope with college life. Ten statements are given and the respondents are to rate the intensity of their agreement or disagreement to the given statements. The second part would allow the researchers to know the respondents’ perception towards college life and the things they do to manage the difficulties they experience in college. The third part contains statements which are possibly the effects of nightlife to the respondents’ studies. It is to be answered in the same way as the second part of the questionnaire. This part would enable the researchers to determine whether the given effects really are the effects nightlife has brought to the respondents’ academic performance. The last part contains given statements also about the influences present in the social and natural environment of the respondents. This part is also to be answered in the same way as the second and third part. Here, the researchers would know the factors that have persuaded them to be involved in such nightly activities.
The questionnaire follows the semantic differential format with three open–ended questions and thirty-seven close-ended questions. In the close-ended questions, the respondents are to choose their answer among the choices provided. On the other hand, they are given the freedom to state their own answers in the open-handed questions.

DATA COLLECTION
Gathering and collecting the data for the study is done with the help of the survey questionnaire that are distributed to the respondents. The questionnaires are to be distributed to fifty students from University of the Philippines Cebu College and University of San Carlos Main Campus. UPCC is located in Lahug, Cebu City while USC is located in P. del Rosario St, Cebu City. Since the researchers are students of UPCC, it is easier for them to collect data from UP respondents. They have to go to USC Main to gather data from USC respondents. The respondents are random students who have no classes, free, available and willing to answer the questionnaire. It would take three days for the accomplishment of the collection and gathering of data.

DATA ANALYSIS
After the collection and gathering phase has been done, the data results are analyzed. They are tallied and consolidated giving rise to a clearer picture of the survey results. The item in every question which has garnered the most points from the respondents is considered as the answer of the majority of the respondents to that question. The generalization or conclusion will then come from the majority’s answers.
