Methodology

Research Design

This study will determine if there is a positive or negative effect with the frequent use of shorthand method of texting to the spelling and grammar skills of the students, specifically, the third year high school students of UP High School Cebu. In addition to this, the researchers would also like to know whether the extensive use of cellular phones and the span of time they have been using these could affect their language proficiency. Moreover, this study will help us in determining whether text messaging has contributed, or has been a factor to the deterioration of their academic capabilities. Setting these objectives, the researchers gathered information which will be very useful in conducting the study.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers will conduct a pre-survey and a spelling and grammar test at the University of the Philippines High School Cebu. In choosing our respondents, we considered the fact that UP High School Cebu is located next to the researchers’ school, which is UP Cebu College. Aside from that, we could easily communicate with the respondents since UP High School is also a part of UP itself. We chose our respondents from the high school department since most of the high school students are wide users of cellular phones, and perhaps, shorthand method of texting as well.

Respondents

The respondents of the survey and the spelling and grammar tests are the third year high school students of UP High School Cebu. Most likely in the high school department, these students have cellular phones. And so, they are the expected wide users of shorthand method of texting.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use answer sheets as our research instrument so it would be easy for us to analyze; and the data entry and tabulation will be easily done. Answer sheets are also familiar to the students since all of them had experience on completing answer sheets and they generally do not make the respondents apprehensive.

Our questionnaire consists of three parts. The first part is considered as the pre-survey. Under the pre-survey are three subparts. The first subpart contains the respondents’ personal information. The second subpart contains the questions as to how long these students have been using cellular phones, how many text messages they send every day, and how often they use the shorthand method of texting. The last subpart contains their own opinion or viewpoint about text messaging. The second part of the questionnaire is the Spelling Test. This part of our answer sheet will determine the proficiency of the respondents when it comes to spelling. And the third part is the Grammar Test. This will also identify the proficiency of the students when it comes to their grammar. These tests will find out whether text messaging and the use of shorthand texts are contributing factors that affects the students academically. The pre-survey and the spelling and grammar tests will be the basis in gathering our data. The results will be used in answering and attaining our objectives.

Data Collection

The researchers will conduct a pre-survey to all the third year high school students of UP High School Cebu. The researchers will use a qualitative approach in dealing with this problem, specifically, the questionnaire method. The respondents will be given a three-part answer sheet to be administered by the researchers themselves. The first part of the answer sheet which is the pre-survey, will be answered by putting a check mark before their answer. The questions were formulated based on the three sub-problems from the statement of the problem. The questionnaire method is the appropriate process used for the pre-survey because it becomes more cost-effective as the number of research questions increases. Aside from that, the researcher’s own opinion will not influence the respondent to answer questions in a certain manner and there will be no verbal or visual clues to influence the respondents.

After the pre-survey, the researchers will conduct a spelling and grammar. The researchers will use the testing method as the clerical tool for collecting data. Each respondent will be given an answer sheet that is composed of 15 items for spelling test and 10 items and an essay part for grammar test. The items were from an NCAE reviewer. This will test their spelling and grammar abilities. For the spelling test, they are will be asked to encircle the correctly spelled word and for the grammar test, they will be asked to identify the missing word on the sentences given. The spelling and grammar test will also be administered by the researchers in the respective classrooms. The testing method is the appropriate process for this, since we are aiming to identify how quick these students are in distinguishing the correct spelling and grammar. The respondents are also free to answer the questions in their own-time table, so as not to make them feel pressured by the time.

Data Analysis

The results will be tabulated on a separate sheet and will be analyzed using the percentage formula:

P= (a / b) 100

Where: P = percentage

a = total number of selected answers

b = total number of students

The researchers will use the percentage formula so that the tabulation would be easily done and we would have a good idea of the proportion. And also, to get the equivalent percentage of the mostly selected answers from the pre-survey.

For the spelling and grammar tests, we used the formula in finding the average:

A = s/n

Where: A = average

s = total score

n = total number of students

The researchers used the average formula to identify the totality of their scores.
