CHAPTER FOUR
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The study used the descriptive method of research. This method establishes, compares, correlates, and layouts the cause and effect relationship among the variables and factors concerned. The research aims to identify how the variables, such as the location of the respondents affect the evaluation of the barangay program. The participants of the research are the residents of Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, Cebu.

Sampling Procedure

The Stratified Probability Sampling was used by the researcher in conducting the study. The barangay is composed of forty-four sitios. However, the researcher only accessed five sitios out of forty-four. The researcher decided to have three respondents coming from the four selected sitios. Overall, there are fifteen respondents for the survey. In determining the respondents for the survey, convenient sampling was used. This means that the respondents were randomly chosen by the researcher depending on the availability of the people living on that particular area.

A letter was then sent to the barangay hall of Lahug, Cebu City asking the permission of an interview talk with the barangay captain and also get some added information about the solid waste management of the barangay

Respondents and Participants
The respondents are the residents from the different sitios of Barangay Lahug, Cebu City. The number of respondents from each sitio is three. This means that there are a total of fifteen respondents.

The respondents were asked to answer the questionnaire provided by the researcher. The question set was based on the variables hypothesized by the researcher.
Research Instrument

A questionnaire set was developed by the researcher with the English language as the prime medium in communicating. It includes the basic background of the respondent such as name, age, status, occupation and sitio. The questionnaire was composed of open-ended and close-ended questions. This was used to determine the factors that are influential and intervening with the respondents’ knowledge and also with the variables.

An open-ended question elicits a personal and opinionated response from the respondents. On the other hand, a close-ended question offers only YES or NO answers to measure the reaction towards a certain question.
Before letting the respondents answer the provided questionnaire, they're being asked to write in their personal information, that is name, age, occupation, status, gender and sitio. These will be one of the variables needed to analyze data in the next chapter.

The first part of the questionnaire tackles about the familiarity of the respondents with regard to the R.A. 9003 law or also know as the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”. The second part is also about their familiarity of the barangay’s solid waste management program in harmony with R.A. 9003.

A letter was sent to the barangay captain asking permission to lend a few minute of talk/interview in connection with the study. However, a barangay official told the researcher that the captain is not available. Instead, the barangay official gave the researcher data and information about the program.
