Chapter III
Study Framework
Theoretical Framework
Nowadays, people are faced with the problem of time management. In this fast-paced world, sometimes we no longer know which things to prioritize. According to Jordan and Nettles (2000), the investments students make during their off-hours in themselves and in their community affect their investment in schooling and consequently, their performance in school. This view clearly explains how an extracurricular activity done by a student can affect his or her academic performance. This can be generalized and related to different extra-curricular activities and how this affects one’s original occupation.
An investment refers to an extra-curricular activity done by an individual whether a student or professional. The theory explains how an investment one makes affects his or her original profession due to the time and effort each profession needs. When one makes an investment, he or she gives time and effort in order to accomplish it. However, when one has an occupation before making an investment, it will cause one to divide his or her time thus making it hard to manage and accomplish both activities at the same time.
According to Daniel Becerra (2009), “There is a need to be clear about what aspect of your life you will focus on next and more importantly for how long will you do it” (para. 5). This is related to the importance of balancing one’s time especially when one has too many investments because one has to know its consequences on another profession he or she may already have. One’s original occupation may be affected by an investment due to too much work involved. Thus, this leaves one confused on which one to prioritize. Since one is busy with his or her investments, he or she is no longer capable of managing one’s time. There are instances when one has to sacrifice his or her investments just to save oneself from being fired from one’s job or failing a subject.
Figure 1 shows how an investment, an activity one does aside from his or her work, affects the individual and consequently his or her original occupation. An example is a bank employee who ventures into a small personal business such as selling jewelries. If she starts to sell jewelries, this may affect her original occupation as a bank employee. Instead of focusing on working in the bank, she is forced to adjust her schedule in order to meet with her clients for her jewelry business. This affects her original routine. On the other hand, this may also help her earn more money and inspire her to work hard. This is a sample case that can be applied to the theory of this study. This theory will help the researchers know how an investment of an individual affects his or her original occupation thus giving the readers an idea whether or not its effects are positive or negative.
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework of this study shows how the networking business affects the studies of working students. Therefore, the given theory wherein Jordan and Nettles focus on the students and their academic performance fits right in. The theory suggests that the investments, which in this study refers to part-time work of students, affect their investment and performance in school.
In the theoretical framework, the assumption that the investments that students make in the community affects their school performance was generalized in order to relate it to different situations. In the conceptual framework, the researchers focus on a certain group people, the students. The investment they make is joining the networking business while their original occupation is going to school.
Since a lot of people from different age groups as well as different fields of expertise are into the networking fad, the researchers chose the students because they are very much affected when it comes to problems with time management. Aside from that, they easily fall prey to the promises of network marketing companies because of their vulnerability. This leads most of the students to join because of the urge for financial stability. Due to the great necessity of students to acquire money, they choose to work while going to school. Thus, this also pushes students to join leading to a possible effect on their studies because of the clash of priorities.
Figure 2 shows how the networking business affects the studies of students. “Students who work longer hours are likely to display less engagement, less motivation, and less effort to learn” (Singh, Dika, & Chang, 2009). This is one of the reasons why people have the impression that working students will most likely have bad performance in school because of one’s studies as well the long hours he or she has to spend in working. Due to the desperate need for money, a lot of students are joining the networking business because of its relaxing way of earning. Network Marketing helps students earn money while in school because it does not require one to work in an office but there are still a possibility that an investment like joining the networking business will have positive or negative affects to one’s studies. With the help of the conceptual framework we know that this study seeks to find out how the networking business affects the studies of students.
Operational Framework
The Network Marketing business in Cebu is very progressive. There are several international organizations that are opening its doors to the Cebuano market, giving Cebuanos a chance to experience how the networking business works. Since a lot of students, in high school and college, are joining the networking business, the researchers chose to focus on college students in Metro Cebu.
The chosen college students are tested whether the networking business has a positive or negative effect towards their studies. The variables are time management, study habits, grades, and the students’ attendance in class. Time management is very important because if one lacks time management skills then he or she would not be able to balance his or her time between work and school. The study habits of a particular student is also important in order to know the effects of an investment on his or her academic performance because when a working student has bad study habits, he or she will surely fail but if one has good study habits as well as good time management skills then one has nothing to worry about. One’s grades are also an important component because it measures how well he or she is doing in school before and after joining the networking. Lastly the student’s attendance in class is essential because it shows how well one manages his or her time and which one he or she prioritizes.
Figure 3 shows how the networking business affects the studies of the college students in Metro Cebu in terms of how they manage their time, their study habits, grades, and their attendance in class before and after joining the business. Since a lot of students today are joining network marketing in order to meet their own needs, the researchers chose to focus on college students to find out the effect of working and going to school at the same time.
