RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Overview

This research paper aims to find the answer about which group of subjects render the most pressure to students: General Education subjects or Major Psychology subjects. For the researchers to achieve the answers, they chose to know the perspective of the students in relation to these courses. The researchers chose to conduct the research in the University of the Philippines-Cebu, with 34 respondents all from the Psychology department, and these respondents will answer a questionnaire. The respondents will answer a questionnaire. The research design that we would be using will be in a quantitative and qualitative approach. The data to be collected will then be analyzed and interpreted. The researchers will also be using the University of the Philippines curriculum as basis for some of the interpretation.

Research Design

The research design the researchers will be using is in a quantitative manner. This method gives specific research problems and terms. The surveys, controlled observations, and other research manipulation in quantitative method will be making the gathered information more reliable. Thus, using the quantitative method is very useful in making the thesis stronger: less discussion but very accurate.

This research design will help the researchers not to become biased in gathering the research data. The data will then be discussed further through data analysis that will be gathered objectively. This is essential especially when a study is needed to measure the cause and effect relationships between variables. The aim of the quantitative approach, ultimately, is to avoid the bias of the researchers in describing the information gathered.

On the other hand, aside from using the quantitative manner, qualitative data gathering will also be useful in the research. Qualitative gathering, according to Polgar and Thomas (1995), generates verbal information rather than numerical values and uses statistical interpretation. In this manner the researcher will be able to explain and properly comprehend the research findings.

The researchers opted to use a qualitative way of approach because of certain advantages. The usage of the qualitative approach is beneficial since it is open for changes and the improvement of the ideas as the study goes on. Aside from these advantages, some researchers say that qualitative data are more preferred because it gives a well-described explanation as well as never before seen findings that might as well contribute to future studies.

Research Participants

To be able to know what general education subject and major subject render the most pressure and stress, the researchers opted to use convenience sampling. From a total of 34 second year Psychology students from the University of the Philippines-Cebu, only 60% will be asked to participate. Convenience sampling allows the choosing of participants by way of convenience and/or availability.

To get the reliable information, the researchers will make sure that the respondents will be able to qualify according to the following criteria: he/she should be a second year regular student who has finished his/her first semester of the Academic Year 2010-2011, should be enrolled in the University of the Philippines-Cebu, and should be a Psychology Major. The qualification of the students will ensure the researchers the information that can be gathered from these people will be reliable, accurate, and true.

Research Instruments

The questionnaire will be used as the main source of acquiring data, and it is divided into four parts:

First is the portion of time consumption. Basically, there are no questions in this part of the questionnaire, but the respondents are asked to rate each subject according to the tendency of the subject to consume time.

Second part is subject appreciation. There are also no questions in this part of the questionnaire since the respondents are once again asked to rate each subject; this time according to the subject’s enjoyment factor.

Third is the portion where the respondents evaluate their own academic performances in the subjects. The respondents are asked to identify their grades (the grades were grouped according to corresponding verbal counterparts) and acknowledge their satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction with their grades.

Last is the portion where the respondents compare General education and Major subjects according to the subjects themselves and the teachers handling them. There are questions asked and the respondents are asked to identify answers to the questions.

Data Analysis and Conclusion

After gathering the data given by the students, conclusions that will be made by the researchers are going to be based on the answers as well as the final number the respondents indicated to rate the subject. The researchers will interpret the scores concerning factors that affect the students, in why they feel pressured and how much they feel pressured in both General Education and Major Psychology subjects.
