CHAPTER ONE
CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Rationale of the Study

After finishing a degree in college, the very first thing that a person will surely do is to scout for job hiring, fill up resumes, apply for a certain job position and prepare for possible interviews. Once that person scored the interview and eventually got accepted, he/she now faces a new world that would be far more challenging than school for his/her future will depend largely on it; this is the world of employment.

However, not all fresh graduates of certain courses get to work on the field that they have been trained in college. Some would think that a bachelor’s degree would be enough for them to land on a job. Others deeply rely on recommendations from friends, family members and colleagues for them to get a job. When people are left with no choice and job is really needed, they would end up working for any job even those that are not related to their bachelor’s degree. This phenomenon now is what we call today underemployment.

Besides unemployment, underemployment is one big issue that the world faces. It is a negative thing because it somehow insults the capacity of a person who has clearly worked their selves out in college only to find out in the future that they would not land on a job that is a match to their degree. In the Philippines, a study of the National Statistics Office in 2010 showed that the employment market in the Philippines has seen better light in the previous year. The data gives that there was an increase number of employed persons in the Philippines that gives the country a 93.1 % employment rate versus the underemployment rate of 6.9 % by July 2010. Along with the data was the underemployed persons reported to be 6,490 (in thousands), a drop from the previous year’s 7,304 (in thousands).

There might be some advantage in seeking job if a person has a degree but in the field of Psychology which is actually the educational background of the respondents of this case study, a 2001 study by the American Psychological Association revealed that Doctorate Degree holders hold the highest employment rate followed by the Masters Degree holders then by the Bachelors Degree holders. This shows that the higher the person’s educational attainment, the higher chances of landing job in-line with course so the researchers will include the plans of the respondents for further education as a factor.

The researchers also had found studies saying that the institution where a person came from and the level of his educational attainment are factors that would contribute to the employment of a person. In fact a study revealed that graduates from the University of the Philippines have proven to have the upper hand in employment in the recent years, a light note that reflects the positive progress of the labor market (Arcelo, Sanyal 1987). Given these information on the relationship of employment to the institution where a person came from, the researchers now have a basis on whether the data they will be gathering soon will coincide with previous studies especially that the respondents are from the University of the Philippines.

Employers also consider the work experience of a person upon hiring a job thus the researchers are not leaving this factor out. But one contributing factor of unemployment is the unavailability of job positions for certain fields that is why people who desperate to have a job will just accept whatever is available. If indeed this is the situation our work force is facing today, people should be more aware of the qualifications that job positions require, the trend of the employment nowadays, and the work providers also in turn must open positions for certain fields of employment.

In line with this situation, researchers of this study want to find out the employment status of newly graduates psychology majors and to know if they are “properly employed” or if their jobs are in-line with their college course or if they are underemployed. The researchers are very anxious to find out the employment status of newly graduated psychology majors because they themselves would soon be entering the employment world. Also, given the fact that economies nowadays are facing crisis, the researchers want to have a view on employment status of fresh graduates so that they may be able to prepare for it.
