Methodology
Overview
This chapter talks about the different methods in data collection and data analysis, the instruments used in the research, the techniques applied by the researchers regarding the research on The Effects of Networking Business on the studies of College Students of Metro Cebu. Its main objective is to determine whether networking business will give an impact on the studies of college students. The main factors of the research are as follows: time management, study habits, attendance and grades. The researchers will deliberately choose 60 respondents from the different colleges and universities in Metro Cebu such as University of the Philippines, St. Theresa’s College and University of San Carlos. After the gathering of data, the researchers will interpret the results from the survey answered by the respondents. The researchers will also make use of other sources aside from the questionnaire such as books, articles and the like.
Research Design
This research is a descriptive method of research. A descriptive type of research describes the condition of the environment such as events and people. The researchers are to describe the condition of the studies of the college students who are involved in a networking business. This study uses explanatory research wherein it ought to elucidate the relationship between two or more different variables. In this case, the variables included are networking business and the studies of the students that comprises of time management, attendance, grades, compliance of requirements and study habits. It entails the relationship between the two whether the networking business has affected the studies of the student.
At the end of the questionnaire, the researchers used a quantitative research design wherein a Likert scale is used. It is used to compute the statistics of the respondent’s answers regarding the situations given in the questionnaire. A quantitative research design involves mathematical and statistical calculations.
Sampling Procedure
The researchers used a non-probability sampling in which purposive sampling was focused. Purposive sampling has a specific target of group of people. It means that the respondents are selected through a criteria created by the researchers. The respondent should be a member of networking business company and a college student in one of the selected colleges or universities in Metro Cebu. These are the criteria of the respondent in this research.
Respondents
The respondents should be college students within Metro Cebu. The researchers select their respondents by choosing 10 respondents from the six different schools chosen. There are a total of 60 respondents in from University of the Philippines Cebu, St. Theresa’s College, University of San Carlos Cebu City, Cebu Doctor’s University, University of Cebu and Cebu Normal University.
Instrument
The researchers used surveys for their questionnaires. The first part of the questionnaire is the demographics of the respondent. It is composed of the name which is optional, age, sex, school, course and year, and the name of their networking business company. The next part is the main part of the questionnaire which asks about the respondent’s perception on networking business and his/her studies. Closed-ended questions were used in this part. On the last part of the questionnaire, a Likert scale was used to measure how much the business has affected the time management, attendance, and grades of the respondent. This type of scale is commonly used in questionnaires. Situational statements are given to evaluate themselves. The Likert scale used in this research is a five-point scale in which 1 states that the respondent is not at all likely with the statement and 5 describes that the respondent is very likely with the statement.
Data Collection
The primary source for the data analysis is the results of the survey conducted by the researchers. In addition, the researchers will also interview one person from each of the schools selected to add further details that are not shown in the questionnaires. There is no secondary source in data collection since there are still no studies made in line with this specific research; however other thesis and research papers that are closely related were used to aid in the study.
Data Analysis
One kind of method used by the researchers is a qualitative type of research. A qualitative kind of method is a flexible type of research wherein it does not involve mathematical or scientific calculations. It is more challenging to compute since opinion-type of questions are used. The qualitative method can be used in several types of researches such as case studies. This technique is much easier to plan out and not as accurate to prepare since this does not need a large size sampling. Thus, it is not as time-consuming as the quantitative type of research; however a qualitative research must be planned scrupulously. The researchers used a qualitative type of `questions in the first part of the questionnaire in which the respondents are free to answer their own opinions.
The researchers will pair the choices of each question with a corresponding number and tally them according to category. Then, the researchers will compute for the average of each choice per category. For the next part of the questionnaire in which Likert scale was used, the researchers will also compute the mean of the answers of each respondent. The higher the mean is, the respondent has better study habits. If the result is a low average, it means that the respondent has been negatively affected by the business.
