CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Teenagers of this generation are more outgoing and very active in socializing with their fellow teens compared to those in the past. They spend more time mingling with their peers, particularly in schools where they consume more than eight hours of their day. Despite this, young adults’ time has not been focused to school alone. Due to pressures in school, they need an avenue to let out stress, go away from brain-wracking exams, reports and projects, give their brain cells a break and breathe in some relaxing air. In unwinding, they are most commonly found with their friends and peers.
According to Papalia, Olds & Feldman (1989), peer relationships become more intimate due to the time they spend with each other which is greater compared to the time spent with the family. Adolescents hang out in many ways. There are people who like these ways, others find them crazy and extraordinary, while some totally dislike their ways of hanging out. One of these ways is having nightlife. Nightlife refers to going to party houses and clubs at night basically to party and have fun. Partygoers come in large or small groups and spend time enjoying until wee hours in the morning. These nightly activities are most popular in the city where various clubs are established almost everywhere. People whose ages are in the early 20’s are commonly present in such places but many teenagers are also found to be hanging around in these areas. And as time goes by, more and more teenagers are enticed to party at night with peers. This is because peer influence is a “powerful force during adolescence” (Tate, 2006). According to Thomas Tate, peers help an adolescent’s social development because through peers, teenagers “gain an understanding of the world outside of their families” (Tate, 2006).
Problems and issues have surfaced because of these nightly activities. These issues bother mostly the parents. Many parents disapprove this kind of hanging out due to the alleged negative effects it could bring to their children. Even the society thinks and sees nightlife in a negative light. The society thinks that partying at night would only bring harm to the teenagers.
This study came out of the researchers’ curiousity and concern of the said issue. Nightlife has always been perceived negatively. To give a fair judgement, the researchers decided to conduct this study. They wanted to know whether nightlife could only bring danger and harm to people or not. They also wanted to have a concrete and solid proof to certify whether these allegations about nightlife’s effects are true or not. Through this research study, people could gain more information about students’ college life, how students manage it, and how has college been affected by the students’ surroundings.
Statement of the Problem
This study is conducted to find out the effects nightlife has brought to students’ studies. Specifically, it seeks the following objectives:
* · To understand why students go out at night
* · To identify how active nightlife has affected their study habits, grades and attendance in school
* · To know how often they go out at night
* · To figure out how the students have been influenced in going out at night by the people they are with, their social and natural environment, and school
Significance
This study is very essential most especially to the general public. Everyone would be able to understand the cause-effect relationship of nightlife and the students’ studies. This would tell the reality of college life, may this be positive or negative.
This would be very significant to a number of different people. Considering that the students are the respondents of this study, they are the ones who would largely be affected. The nature of college life would be further explained making the students understand the situations and problems that they have experienced. They would be able to discern the possible consequences if they opt for nightlife as their way of unwinding from school pressure. After knowing the results of the study, they would be able to think properly better ways of loosening up, ways that would not compromise the more important things in life.
Since they are the ones who always participate in nightly activities, partygoers would also be affected by this study, may they be students or not. They would be able to realize the changes that happened in their lives due to active nightlife. They would be able to know the effects nightlife has brought to other people. This study would open their eyes to the reality nightlife has made to the society particularly those that are still studying. They would know their limits in influencing or attracting their peers towards having nightlife.
Non-partygoers are also affected by this study. Although they don’t belong to those that have nightlife, they belong to the public who serves as critics of various activities in the society and the people who get themselves involved with such activities. This study would provide them information about nightlife and its effects on students. Through this, they would be able to give an informed, reasonable and fair judgment to nightlife. They could help in disseminating information about these nightly activities and influence others.
Families, particularly the parents, are undoubtedly one of the benefactors of this study. They would be given explanations o the various behaviors teenagers have now that seemed to be negative to them. Nightlife would be introduced to them in a neutral light. The nature of nightlife will be explained, the people who go actively in party houses and clubs, the things these people do there and the like would also be presented. The parents would be given the opportunity to decide whether nightlife really is a negative activity or not. The nature of college life would also be explained to them. This study would make them understand the struggles their children are experiencing during this level of education and the demands they are facing. With such knowledge on nightlife and college life, they could now be more effective in guiding their children without being too tight or too loose.
And lastly, the various establishments which operate during nighttime giving the partygoers the fun that they wanted and expected are affected. This study would let them know the effects of their business on the people most especially on the students. This knowledge would then enable them to formulate actions on how to address such effects for the betterment of their business and the society as well.
