CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
Science is being taught since grade school until the tertiary level. There are many fields under science. One of these fields is biology. Biology is a field of science that deals about the study of life. Most of us have an idea that Biology is full of understandings about the life of certain species. It is a subject filled with many complicated and difficult terms.
Teaching Biology requires good teaching techniques of the students especially that this subject is in the field of science. Biology has been considered by some students as one of the difficult subjects in school. It lies on how the teacher uses his or her teaching technique to encourage the students to learn this subject. Teachers have their own way on how to inform students about biology. Some teachers use some teaching techniques that are easy for the students to learn about the subject and take the subject as challenging but full of fun.
The researchers are curious on what are some factors affecting the grades of the students. We, the researchers have different teacher upon taking biology. At the end of the semester, we attained different grades. We discussed about our Biology teachers that have different teaching techniques and qualities that influenced our grades. Because of that the researchers want to know how the different teaching techniques of our different Biology teachers affect the grades of the students.
Teaching techniques of the teacher contribute a big impact on the learning of the students. It is also the role of the teacher to keep the students’ interest in class. Teaching technique is partly the reason of the student to do well in class or not. Students’ grades are greatly affected by how their teacher teaches them and what qualities they possessed. The researchers feel that it is important to know the effects so that a necessary action can be done. That is why the researchers have decided to make a study on the effects of teaching techniques of Bio 1 teacher on the grades of the students. Through this study, the researchers will be able to prove if teaching techniques do affect the students’ grades through data collection and analysis.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to know the effects of the teaching technique of the Bio 1 Teachers on the grade of UP Cebu 1st Year Block B Management students. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following sub-problems:
1. What are the qualities of the Bio 1 Teachers that affect the learnings of the students?
2. How do the Bio 1 Teachers give examinations to the students?
3. How do the Bio 1 Teachers discuss the subject to their students?
4. How was the grade of the students in relation to the teaching technique of the Bio 1 Teachers?
5. What is the appropriate teaching technique of the teachers that best suit the students?

Objectives of the Study
1. To know the qualities of the Bio 1 teachers that affects the learnings of the students.
2. To identify the ways Bio 1 teachers give examinations to the students.
3. To know how the Bio 1 teachers discuss the subject to their students.
4. To recognize the output of the grades of the Bio1 students in relation to the teaching techniques of the teachers.
5. To discover the appropriate teaching technique of the teachers that best suit the students.
Significance or Importance of the study
The study is very important to both the students and teachers. The researchers pursue this study in order for the teachers to be aware of what is the output or the result of the performance of the students from the teaching techniques being used. The question here is that, “Do teachers’ technique really affect the grades of the students?” Through this study, we will be able to answer the question stated above. Hopefully through this study, the teachers will be aware about the appropriate teaching styles that suit the students. In addition to this, the teachers will be able to adjust what method of teaching appropriate for different students.
The students can also benefit this study since this issue is addressed to them, to help them with their grades.

Scope and Delimitation of the study
This study limits to the students of 1st Year Block B students under the degree of Bachelor of Science in Management of the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus who took up the subject Biology 1 last semester A.Y. 2011-2012.
There are 30 Block-B BS Management students. Out of 30 1st Year block B management students of UP Cebu, 20 students were the source as a sample in conducting the survey excluding the researchers.
This study is only concerned with the output from the teaching techniques of their biology 1 teacher to the performance of the students.
